Elon Musk built his business empire — SpaceX, Tesla, Starlink, Neuralink, The Boring Company, and X — on a foundation of federal contracts, subsidies, and regulatory approvals. A Washington Post analysis (Feb 26, 2025) tallied roughly $38 billion in government support to his companies over two decades, including about $18 billion in federal contracts in the prior decade. In 2024 he became the largest Republican donor, spending more than $275 million to elect Donald Trump, and pitched Trump on the “Department of Government Efficiency” concept the same year.

After Trump’s inauguration, Musk served as co-director and de facto leader of DOGE from January 20 to May 31, 2025 — a “special government employee” whom a court declared the unit’s de facto head. In that role he directed cost-cutting across agencies that simultaneously regulate and contract with his own companies. During the same window, SpaceX won a $5.9 billion Space Force contract (April 4, 2025), the FAA approved Starlink terminal deals, and federal investigations touching his businesses were dropped or defunded. His aide Marko Elez, 25, was granted administrative access to Treasury payment systems handling roughly $6 trillion in annual federal flows; the Treasury later said the edit access was given “mistakenly” and revoked it (ABC News and The Hill, Feb 2025). DOGE’s claimed savings were repeatedly revised downward and, per multiple reports, “dogged by inaccuracies, errors, omissions and overstatements”; the Cato Institute found it “had no noticeable effect on the trajectory of spending” while engineering the largest peacetime federal workforce reduction on record.

Musk’s ventures carry documented foreign financial ties. Saudi Arabia’s Kingdom Holding was among the largest investors in his Twitter takeover (Bloomberg and Al Jazeera, late 2022). Bloomberg reported (Jan 29, 2025) that sanctioned Russian oligarch and senator Suleiman Kerimov held a stake in SpaceX through a trust for years while under U.S. sanctions, and Tesla has purchased aluminum from the Russian supplier Rusal since 2020 (CNBC, March 14, 2022). Reuters reported (Oct 25, 2024) that the NASA administrator called for an investigation into reported Musk–Putin communications; Musk has denied the underlying claim (AP, Oct 12, 2022).

In June 2025 Musk broke publicly with Trump over the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” then posted — and days later deleted with an apology — a claim that Trump “is in the Epstein files.” He flooded X with attacks over the administration’s handling of the Epstein files, announced an “America Party,” and was rebuked by Trump in turn. The two reconciled at Charlie Kirk’s memorial in September 2025, and by December 2025 Musk was again funding GOP campaigns for the 2026 midterms. DOGE was formally disbanded in November 2025, though parts of its infrastructure and personnel remained embedded across federal agencies.
