National Design Studio Launches America.gov at Mellon Auditorium Event: Trump Names Coristine Lead Engineer, Thanks Arnell and Musk

Date kind. Sept. 29 is the event date and the site’s go-live date: Fox News says America.gov “launched Sept. 29” and the White House fact sheet of that day says the President launched it. The orders signed that day were published in the Federal Register later (see the linked order entries).

What happened. The National Design Studio (NDS) hosted a launch event that FedScoop names “Hello, America” at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington. FedScoop is the only report found that gives that name to the event; SAN shows “Hello, America” as the site’s welcome text. Trump’s remarks, as transcribed by Roll Call Factbase, thank Joe Gebbia, then “Chief Brand Architect of the United States, Peter Arnell”. Of NDS staff he says: “The lead engineer also, Ed Coristine. Ed, thank you.” He credits Elon Musk as “the man who initially envisioned the transformation of government through technology and brought us the talent to get the job done, and that’s Elon Musk”. Fox News independently reports that Trump identified Coristine as the project’s lead engineer. Coristine is the former DOGE staffer profiled in 2025-01-20–coristine-appointed-doge-despite-security-risks.

Trump’s framing. “We actually started this almost on day one”. And: “You’ll now have one front door for every single question.” FedScoop reports the platform brings together information from “roughly 29,000” government websites.

The order signed. The White House fact sheet says Trump “signed an Executive Order to ensure Federal agencies integrate with America.gov”. That is the America.gov order, covered in 2026-09-29–eo-14432-streamlining-access-to-government-services-through-america-gov-gsa-nds-omb-login-gov. A second order the same day, on Super Intelligence terminology, is in 2026-09-29–eo-14434-inaugurating-the-era-of-super-intelligence-orders-si-in-place-of-ai-executive-branch.

What the launch left open. FedScoop: “It wasn’t immediately clear how the AI underpinning the platform was procured”. It adds: “The White House didn’t provide responses to FedScoop’s questions”. Vendor identity is outside this entry.

When transactions arrive. The fact sheet says “Later this year, Americans will be able to complete tasks like passport renewal and Medicare enrollment on America.gov”. FedScoop reports “Gebbia said there are plans come 2027 to allow users to continue processes on the platform itself and track progress”. The timelines differ.

Connections. The Justice Department fraud-tip program announced weeks later tells the public to “report fraud by going to america.gov/fraud”: 2026-10-20–doj-whip-fraud-whistleblower-incentive-program-announced-25m-treasury-30k-awards-trump-arbitrator. NDS was created by 2025-08-21–eo-14338-creates-nds-ndstudio-gov-pre-registered-day-prior; GSA’s OneGov AI deals are at 2025-08-07–gsa-aws-onegov.

Unconfirmed. Whether the second order was signed on stage is not established.

Update, added after the original entry: Gebbia names the AI vendors on camera. CNBC reports that the America.gov chatbot “powered by artificial intelligence from Google’s Gemini and Elon Musk’s Grok”, citing Gebbia, who told CNBC’s Squawk Box “We have great partners behind the scenes”. The English auto-generated caption of that CNBC Television interview (YouTube), at roughly 0:25, carries the words Gemini and Grok are both powering America.gov, as caption text only; the caption is machine-generated and the saved caption file is held in the research record. The CNBC article is the written corroboration. Vendor-by-vendor detail is outside this entry.

Update, added after the original entry: conflict-of-interest posture. CNBC places Gebbia’s studio role next to a Tesla board seat: “Gebbia sits on the board of directors of Tesla, which is led by Musk, owns a piece of SpaceXAI and uses Grok in its vehicles.” CNBC also writes that xAI “which was acquired by SpaceX and renamed SpaceXAI” did not respond to its request for comment. Those ownership statements are CNBC’s and are not independently verified here. The studio was created within the White House Office of the Executive Office of the President by 2025-08-21–eo-14338-creates-nds-ndstudio-gov-pre-registered-day-prior. Gebbia’s federal employment classification is not documented in the public record, and no public or confidential financial disclosure has been located, so this entry draws no conclusion that a legal conflict exists. His arrival at DOGE is at 2025-02-13–nyt-reports-joe-gebbia-joining-doge-gebbia-confirms-opm-retirement-process-project-volunteering.
