Biography

Kashyap Pramod Patel was born February 25, 1980, in Garden City, New York, to Indian immigrants of Gujarati ancestry who had left Uganda in the early 1970s during Idi Amin’s expulsion of the country’s Asian population. He earned a degree in criminal justice and history from the University of Richmond and a law degree from Pace University in 2005, then worked as a public defender in Miami-Dade County and as a federal public defender for the Southern District of Florida (2005–2012) before serving as a Justice Department prosecutor (2012–2017).

Patel’s political ascent began in 2017 as a senior aide to House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, where he was the primary author of the “Nunes memo” alleging FBI abuse of a FISA warrant against Trump campaign adviser Carter Page — a document that became a cornerstone of the “deep state” narrative. He went on to hold a National Security Council senior directorship (2019–2020) and serve as Department of Defense chief of staff (2020–2021). In November 2024 Trump announced he would replace FBI Director Christopher Wray with Patel, who was confirmed in February 2025, becoming the first person of South Asian descent to lead the bureau. Former Trump Attorney General William Barr had publicly questioned the appointment, saying Patel “had virtually no experience that would qualify him to serve at the highest level of the world’s preeminent law enforcement agency.”

In his 2023 book Government Gangsters, Patel appended a list of 60 people he labeled members of the “Executive Branch Deep State” — including both Democrats and at least ten figures who had served as Trump’s own appointees or nominees, such as Wray, Bolton, Barr, and Rosenstein. He has separately published a “King Donald” children’s-book trilogy and signed copies with the QAnon slogan “#WWG1WGA,” though at his 2025 confirmation hearing he said he had “rejected outright QAnon baseless conspiracy theories.” After taking office, the FBI under Patel disbanded its Washington Field Office public-corruption unit and, alongside Attorney General Pam Bondi, the Justice Department’s Public Integrity Section; in October 2025 it terminated longstanding partnerships with the Anti-Defamation League and the Southern Poverty Law Center. Former senior FBI officials Brian Driscoll, Steven Jensen, and Spencer Evans sued Patel in September 2025, alleging he told subordinates he had been directed to fire anyone identified as having worked on investigations of Trump.

Patel’s pre-appointment finances drew scrutiny during and after confirmation. His federal financial disclosure (OGE Form 278e) showed his consulting firm, Trishul LLC, reported roughly $2.1 million in aggregate consulting income, with a client roster that included the Embassy of Qatar; neither Patel nor Trishul registered under FARA for that engagement, prompting a February 4, 2025 Public Citizen complaint to the DOJ FARA Unit. Filings also documented a roughly $800,000 Trump Media & Technology Group stock award tied to a January 2025 board grant (Business Insider / CNBC, February 7, 2025 — Patel says he declined the compensation), a $25,000 payment from a documentary company run by Kremlin-linked Russian filmmaker Igor Lopatonok (Washington Post, February 7, 2025), and $1 million–$5 million in unvested shares of Elite Depot Ltd., a Cayman Islands entity linked to fast-fashion conglomerate Shein (Wired, February 6, 2025). On March 4, 2025, a Justice Department ethics official granted Patel an authorization to participate in Qatar-related matters, waiving the standard one-year recusal; in December 2025 he signed bilateral security memoranda between the FBI and Qatar’s Ministry of Interior.
