Intercept Surfaces Patel's 2005 Personnel File Disclosing Two Prior Alcohol-Related Arrests

The Intercept surfaced a 2005 letter from Patel’s Miami-Dade Public Defender’s Office personnel file, written by Patel himself as part of his Florida Bar disclosure, detailing two prior alcohol-related arrests: a 2001 arrest for underage public intoxication while a student at the University of Richmond, after being escorted from a basketball game; and a 2005 arrest for public urination as a Pace University law student. Patel wrote at the time: “In a gross deviation from appropriate conduct, we attempted to relieve our bladders while walking home” — the arrest occurred before the act was completed. Patel concluded both incidents were “not representative of my usual conduct.”

The disclosure surfaced one week after The Atlantic published reporting on Patel’s current drinking patterns and unexplained absences as FBI Director (April 17), four days after Patel filed a $250M defamation suit against the magazine. The 2005 personnel file is a contemporaneous self-disclosure in Patel’s own hand, archived in his employer’s records — making it documentary evidence of pattern, not a source-dependent allegation. House Judiciary Democrats subsequently demanded Patel submit to alcohol-screening testing.
