FBI Director Patel Sues The Atlantic and Reporter Fitzpatrick for $250M in Defamation

FBI Director Kash Patel filed a $250 million defamation lawsuit against The Atlantic and reporter Sarah Fitzpatrick three days after the magazine published “The FBI Director Is MIA,” which cited 24+ sources describing Patel’s drinking and unexplained absences. The Atlantic’s institutional response, from SVP of Communications Anna Bross: “We stand by our reporting on Kash Patel, and we will vigorously defend The Atlantic and our journalists against this meritless lawsuit.” Editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg separately stated: “We stand by our reporting on Kash Patel.”

The suit is the second major defamation action Patel has filed against journalists who reported on his conduct. A federal judge tossed Patel’s earlier defamation suit against former FBI assistant director Frank Figliuzzi (now an MSNBC contributor) in April 2026. Patel’s FBI also began investigating New York Times reporter Elizabeth Williamson under federal stalking laws after her February 28, 2026 reporting on Patel’s assignment of an FBI SWAT detail to his girlfriend Alexis Wilkins — a probe DOJ officials blocked for lack of legal basis.
