Biography
Justin Sun grew up in Xining, a provincial capital in far western China, and studied history at Peking University before completing a master’s in East Asian studies at the University of Pennsylvania, where he encountered Bitcoin early. In 2014 he launched Peiwo, a voice-based social app that drew the attention of Alibaba founder Jack Ma, who invited Sun into the inaugural class of his Hupan University in 2015. Sun spent roughly two years as Ripple’s chief representative in greater China, then in 2017 founded the TRON Foundation in Singapore and launched the Tron blockchain. Tron’s September 2017 ICO raised approximately $70 million, completing just days before Chinese regulators banned ICOs.
Sun built Tron into one of the primary networks on which Tether (USDT) — the dominant stablecoin in global crypto markets — circulates, giving his infrastructure a structural significance beyond his personal holdings. He acquired BitTorrent Inc. (legally Rainberry Inc.) for roughly $120 million in 2018, and in October 2022 purchased the HTX (formerly Huobi) exchange, reportedly for around $3 billion. From December 2021 to March 2023 he held a diplomatic post as Grenada’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the WTO in Geneva — an appointment that came with a Grenadian passport and that critics noted amounted to a Chinese national obtaining a diplomatic credential from a small Caribbean nation. He stepped down after the Grenadian government that appointed him lost power. Sun is also known for high-profile spectacle: a $4.57 million 2019 charity-auction lunch with Warren Buffett (canceled, then held in 2020) and the $6.2 million purchase of Maurizio Cattelan’s duct-taped-banana artwork “Comedian” at Sotheby’s in 2024, which he then ate.
On March 22, 2023, the SEC charged Sun and his companies (Case 1:23-cv-02433, SDNY) with the unregistered offer and sale of the TRX and BTT tokens, market manipulation involving more than 600,000 alleged wash trades, and paying celebrities — including Lindsay Lohan, Jake Paul, Soulja Boy, Lil Yachty, Ne-Yo, and Akon — to promote his tokens without disclosing their compensation; the complaint alleged $31 million in illegal proceeds. Beginning in November 2024, Sun invested in Trump-family crypto ventures: an initial $30 million in World Liberty Financial (ABC News headlined the move “Chinese entrepreneur sued for fraud invests $30 million in Trump crypto venture”), rising to $75 million by January 2025, when he was named a WLFI adviser. In February 2025 the SEC and Sun jointly moved to pause the fraud case “over potential resolution.” On May 22, 2025, Sun attended a private dinner with President Trump as the single largest holder of the $TRUMP memecoin, and in July 2025 announced an additional $100 million $TRUMP purchase.
On March 5, 2026, the SEC settled the case: Rainberry Inc. agreed to pay a $10 million civil penalty, and all claims against Sun personally, against Tron Foundation, and against BitTorrent Foundation were dismissed with prejudice, meaning the SEC cannot bring those charges again. The sequence drew sustained congressional scrutiny — Rep. Sean Casten called the settlement a “get-out-of-jail-free card,” and Sen. Richard Blumenthal described the broader dinner-and-investment mechanism as “an unprecedented, pay-to-play scheme to provide access to the presidency to the highest bidder.” The Sun–WLFI relationship later ruptured: in September 2025 WLFI blacklisted a Sun address holding roughly $107 million in tokens, and in April 2026 Sun sued WLFI over the frozen assets, drawing a defamation countersuit in May 2026. Both suits remain pending.
