Biography

JD Vance was born James Donald Bowman in Middletown, Ohio, in 1984, and was raised largely by his maternal grandparents amid family instability he later chronicled in Hillbilly Elegy (2016). He enlisted in the Marine Corps after high school, deployed to Iraq, and used military benefits toward a degree from Ohio State University (2009) before attending Yale Law School (JD, 2013), where he met his future wife, Usha Chilukuri, and was mentored by professor Amy Chua. Hillbilly Elegy became a New York Times bestseller and a go-to text for explaining Trump-era working-class politics; it was adapted into a 2020 Netflix film. Vance’s political trajectory reversed in this period — he called Trump “cultural heroin” in 2016 and reportedly described him as “America’s Hitler” in private messages, then by 2021 sought and won Trump’s endorsement for his Ohio Senate run.

The defining relationship of Vance’s career is with billionaire investor Peter Thiel, whom he first encountered at a 2011 Thiel talk at Yale Law. Thiel hired Vance as a principal at his Mithril Capital fund (2016–2019), seeded the Cincinnati-based Narya Capital that Vance returned to Ohio to lead in 2019, directed roughly $15 million during the 2022 cycle to the Protect Ohio Values PAC backing Vance’s 2022 Senate campaign — among the largest single-donor commitments to one Senate candidate that cycle — and personally lobbied Trump to choose Vance as his 2024 running mate. Vance converted to Catholicism in August 2019, baptized at the Dominican House in Cincinnati and taking the confirmation name Augustine, situating him within the Catholic-integralist intellectual stream associated with Adrian Vermeule and Patrick Deneen.

In his August 2024 foreword to Heritage Foundation president Kevin Roberts’s Dawn’s Early Light, Vance praised Heritage as “the most influential engine of ideas for Republicans from Ronald Reagan to Donald Trump” — a documented endorsement of the institution behind Project 2025, from which he had publicly kept distance during the campaign. As Vice President, two of his tiebreaking Senate votes proved structurally decisive: the 51–50 vote confirming Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense (January 24, 2025) and the 51–50 vote passing the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (July 1, 2025), a package combining — per the legislation as signed in July 2025 — roughly $4.5 trillion in tax cuts, $170.1 billion in immigration-enforcement appropriations, and a tiered 8% tax on large university endowments — the latter building on a 35% endowment-tax bill Vance himself introduced in December 2023.

Vance has positioned himself as the presumptive 2028 Republican frontrunner and a manager of the MAGA coalition’s internal factions. At Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest in December 2025, amid a public clash over antisemitism between figures including Ben Shapiro, Tucker Carlson, and Steve Bannon, he declined to draw explicit red lines against antisemitic figures or to condemn Holocaust denier Nick Fuentes by name, telling the audience he “didn’t bring a list of conservatives to denounce or to de-platform.” His trans-Atlantic ties include Cambridge philosopher James Orr — whom Vance has called his “British sherpa” and who was appointed Reform UK Head of Policy in February 2026.
