Palmer Luckey was born in Long Beach, California, and homeschooled by his mother, taking community-college courses from age 14 and building virtual-reality headsets by 16. His prototype, the “Oculus Rift,” gained attention at E3 2012, and an April 2012 Kickstarter raised about $2.5 million; he dropped out of California State University, Long Beach to run the company. In March 2014, Facebook acquired Oculus VR for roughly $2 billion — structured as $400 million cash plus Facebook stock and milestone payments — and Luckey, then 21, stayed on as a VP of Product. Forbes estimated his net worth at $700 million in 2015.

In September 2016, The Daily Beast reported — citing Reddit post history, website records, and Luckey’s own emailed confirmations — that he had donated $10,000 to Nimble America, a pro-Trump group founded by moderators of Reddit’s r/The_Donald that funded an anti–Hillary Clinton billboard. Luckey had posted under the pseudonym “NimbleRichMan” and was listed as the group’s vice president. He left Facebook in March 2017; per Wall Street Journal reporting (November 2018), internal emails showed he believed he was fired over his Trump support, and Luckey said in a 2019 interview, “I left Facebook because I got fired. I wouldn’t have otherwise.” He went on to make documented political contributions including $100,000 to Trump’s 2017 inaugural committee (CNBC, April 2017), hosted a 2020 Trump fundraiser in Newport Beach, and co-hosted a Trump fundraiser in 2024.

In April 2017 Luckey co-founded Anduril Industries with four colleagues — Brian Schimpf, Matt Grimm, Trae Stephens, and Joe Chen — the first three of whom came from Peter Thiel’s Palantir Technologies. The company was seeded by Thiel’s Founders Fund, where co-founder Trae Stephens is also a partner; its name is the Elvish word for the reforged sword in Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. Anduril builds autonomous weapons and the “Lattice” AI command-and-control software, and its products run from CBP surveillance towers on the U.S.–Mexico border to Army battlefield networks. Its valuation climbed from a $14 billion round (August 2024) to $30.5 billion (June 2025) and to $61 billion after a $5 billion round led by Thrive Capital and Andreessen Horowitz (TechCrunch, May 13, 2026), making it the highest-valued private U.S. defense-tech company; investors include 1789 Capital, the fund of Donald Trump Jr.

Luckey is publicly tied to several network and political relationships. His sister Ginger Luckey is married to former Rep. Matt Gaetz, Trump’s initial 2024 Attorney General nominee. Anduril director Michael Obadal was nominated by Trump in March 2025 and confirmed as Under Secretary of the Army (51–47) in September 2025, divesting his Anduril stock as a confirmation condition; Anduril holds a $20 billion Army contract awarded March 2026. In 2025 Luckey co-founded Erebor, a bank chartered by the OCC in February 2026 after an unusually fast eight-month review — an approval Sen. Elizabeth Warren has investigated as a possible “corrupt political favor” to “the President’s billionaire supporters” (Senate Banking Committee, February 2026).
