Robert Bowers, 46, enters the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh's Squirrel Hill neighborhood during Shabbat morning services and opens fire with an AR-15 and three Glock pistols, killing 11 worshippers and wounding 6 others, including 4 responding police officers. It is the deadliest antisemitic attack in United States history.

Minutes before the attack, Bowers posts on Gab — the "free speech" social media platform that became a haven for users banned from Twitter and Facebook: "HIAS likes to bring invaders in that kill our people. I can't sit by and watch my people get slaughtered. Screw your optics, I'm going in." HIAS (Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society), a Jewish refugee resettlement organization, had organized a National Refugee Shabbat the previous week, which Bowers cited as his trigger.

Bowers's radicalization pathway follows the now-documented pattern: mainstream social media → alternative platforms (Gab) → immersion in "Great Replacement" conspiracy theory → violence. His Gab profile is saturated with antisemitic content, white genocide conspiracy theories, and hostility toward Trump ("Trump is a globalist, not a nationalist") from the further-right position that Trump is insufficiently extreme. The "Great Replacement" theory — that Jewish elites orchestrate non-white immigration to replace white populations — connects Bowers to a transnational extremist ideology that will produce the Christchurch massacre five months later.

The "screw your optics" declaration is significant. Bowers is explicitly rejecting the alt-right's strategy of maintaining respectable appearances (the "optics" debate that consumed the movement after Charlottesville). He represents the faction that has decided respectability politics are a trap and that direct violence is the appropriate response to perceived racial threat. This split — between those who want to work within institutions and those who want to destroy them — runs through the entire pipeline from Gamergate to January 6.

Bowers is convicted on all 63 federal counts in June 2023 and sentenced to death. Gab briefly loses its hosting provider and payment processor but returns online within days, demonstrating the difficulty of permanently deplatforming extremist infrastructure.
