Abdul El-Sayed Defeats Mike Rogers in Michigan Senate Race, Becoming the First Muslim Elected to the U.S. Senate
Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has won the U.S. Senate election in Michigan, according to a race call by the Associated Press, which called the race at 2:27 a.m., Bridge Michigan and NPR reported. He led Republican Mike Rogers by nearly 6 percentage points with 85% of all ballots counted, and is the first Muslim ever elected to the US Senate. In his victory speech El-Sayed addressed President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance and Rogers, who had each claimed he or his family were associated with the Muslim Brotherhood: “You chose hate, and Michigan chose hope.”
The race attracted record outside spending, Bridge reported; El-Sayed said voters “built something bigger than a bank account.” In the closing days, Rep. Haley Stevens reversed course and announced she was endorsing Rogers.
