Voters in Eight States Approve Noncitizen-Voting Bans and Voter ID Amendments; Arizona, California and Colorado Measures Fail
Voters in eight states approved ballot measures Tuesday tightening voting requirements, while three other measures failed, Pluribus News reported. Noncitizen voting prohibitions were passed in five states: prohibitions were approved handily in Alaska, Arkansas, Kansas, South Dakota and West Virginia, where support nearly reached 80%. Voter ID constitutional amendments passed in Nevada, North Carolina and Ohio, where Secretary of State Frank LaRose called the vote “a win for election integrity.” Arizona and California voters rejected constitutional amendments that blended noncitizen voting and voter ID. The results bring the number of states that have approved noncitizen voting bans since 2018 to 20, according to Ballotpedia, though research has shown that noncitizen voting is exceedingly rare.
In Colorado, the Associated Press said Amendment 84 failed; it would have required voters to write the last four digits of their Social Security number, driver’s license or identification card on mail-in ballot envelopes, and 63.4% of voters were against it as of midday Wednesday. Colorado voters also rejected Amendment 81, which would have required local police to notify U.S. Department of Homeland Security about certain people charged; the AP called it failed when 55% of voters were against it.
