NewsGuard Sting: 21 of 60 Political Influencers Showed Interest in an Undisclosed Paid TikTok Campaign Ad

NewsGuard ran a sting on political influencers. In October 2026, a consulting firm called R&H Strategies emailed 60 online political influencers offering up to $2,000 to post a TikTok video supporting the positions of a congressional candidate. R&H Strategies is not a real firm: NewsGuard created it to test how readily political influencers would pass off paid campaign messaging as their own work. Per Cybernews, the pitch asked that creators “not disclose that the video is paid content.” Of the 60 influencers, 21 expressed interest and were not deterred by the condition. Five refused, and all five were right-leaning content creators. NewsGuard found that left-leaning creators (40%) were more interested in the offer than right-leaning creators (30%).

The test lands on a gap in the rules. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) doesn’t require influencers to mark their political content as sponsored, but it does require them to disclose paid commercial content, and paid political ads are prohibited on TikTok in the United States.
