Maine State Senator's Adopted Son Held by ICE After New Hampshire 287(g) Stop, Then Released Into Canada

The adopted son of Maine state Sen. Denise Tepler was pulled over in New Hampshire by a law enforcement agency that works with ICE through the 287(g) program and detained while leaving the country, the Portland Press Herald reported. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed the detention and said it planned to remove him to Canada; his family confirmed he arrived there on Friday. DHS said his visa expired in 2015 and that his pending asylum application “does not confer legal status in the United States.” His family says he recently obtained Canadian citizenship. Sen. Tepler said he was stopped “10 miles from the border” and taken south, only to be returned to his destination: “It’s wasting taxpayer dollars.” The Press Herald notes that such agreements are illegal in Maine under a new law. He is a private person and is not named here.
