CBS: DOJ Issued Grand Jury Subpoenas to California State and Local Election Officials; Orange County Says One Seeks 77 Registrants' Records
CBS News reported on Oct. 29 that the Justice Department has issued grand jury subpoenas to state and local officials in California, according to sources with direct knowledge and copies CBS saw. The subpoenas were sent between Oct. 21 and Oct. 24. Three of the subpoenas CBS saw were directed to officials at the Los Angeles Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk’s office and ask for documents concerning the county’s correspondence with Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin and acting Deputy Attorney General Trent McCotter in connection with discussions about non-citizen voting, and for records about the agency’s methods for “screening for unlawful voting by aliens.” The Guardian reported that the Orange county registrar of voters confirmed it received a subpoena this week, in addition to three in September, and that the federal grand jury subpoenas seek “unredacted voter registration information” for 77 possible registrants, the office said.
A Justice Department spokesperson said the agency does not comment on leaks about grand jury subpoenas, but added that “all agree that noncitizen voting is properly addressed through criminal law.” The subpoenas themselves are not in the record we located; the date of this entry is the day CBS and the Guardian published.
