DOJ Announces 18 More North Carolina Indictments for Illegal Voting in 2024, 30 Statewide This Year, Days Before the Election

On Thursday, October 29, 2026 (announcement date), the Justice Department announced that 18 people in North Carolina have been indicted for illegally voting in the 2024 election. Nine were charged in the Eastern District of North Carolina, five in the Middle District and four in the Western District. DOJ’s release calls them aliens. The individual defendants, whom the release names, are not named here.

The release says the indictments are in addition to 12 individuals previously indicted in the Eastern District, bringing the statewide total to 30 indicted this year. Acting Deputy Attorney General Trent McCotter is quoted saying “we want to prevent illegal voting from occurring.” United States Attorney Ellis Boyle is quoted calling the indictments an “unmistakable message ahead of the 2026 election.”

The release describes the earlier Eastern District batch two ways: as 12 indictments unveiled on Oct. 15, and as 10 announced earlier this month plus two from earlier in the year.
