Broward Elections Chief Reports Mail Ballot Delays; Florida Counts Only Ballots Received by Election Night

Broward Supervisor of Elections Joe Scott told WSVN that people have mailed ballots and “it’s taken up to two weeks for that ballot to get here.” WLRN reports he said delays affect both outgoing ballots sent to voters and incoming completed ballots, and NBC Miami reports he said a large batch of Hallandale Beach ballots was found sitting at a postal facility for about a week. Florida law says ballots “must be received by the supervisor by 7 p.m. the day of the election,” so delivery time decides whether a ballot counts. WLRN reports the U.S. Postal Service is looking into the delivery concerns, and that Miami-Dade officials have not encountered postal service delays. USPS says 97.98 percent of ballot mail was on time through October 9, a national measure that neither confirms nor refutes Broward’s account.
