San Diego City Council Unanimously Passes 45-Day Data Center Moratorium After NAVWAR Site Proposal
On Tuesday, the San Diego City Council “unanimously backed a 45-day moratorium on the permitting, approval and development of data centers within city limits,” NBC San Diego reported. The vote followed a proposal last week in which a local developer floated the idea of building one at the Naval Information Warfare Systems Command site (NAVWAR), after which Mayor Todd Gloria immediately issued and signed an executive order to temporarily pause data center development.
The report says the moratorium “could be extended for nearly two years” and gives city staff 180 days to bring preliminary recommendations. Council President Joe LaCava said: “San Diegans were clear, unambiguous and passionate about why data centers don’t belong in San Diego.” The station notes the ban “can’t directly impact the possibility of one on the NAVWAR site,” which is Navy-owned. The ordinance text and vote record were not read for this entry.
