CNN and ABC Report DOJ Is Investigating Lewandowski and DHS Contracting After an Inspector General Referral
CNN and ABC News report, citing anonymous sources, that Justice Department prosecutors are investigating allegations of contract misconduct at the Department of Homeland Security, including the role of Corey Lewandowski, who worked as de facto chief of staff to former Secretary Kristi Noem. The probe follows a criminal referral for Lewandowski from the DHS Inspector General’s office, and ABC says the investigation is in its early stages. CNN reports that Washington, DC, US Attorney Jeanine Pirro told officials in her office that she wanted investigators to look into claims of kickbacks connected to contracting at DHS. The Justice Department declined to comment. Lewandowski’s attorney Adam Trigg said Mr. Lewandowski has not been contacted by the Justice Department regarding any investigation, and he denies any wrongdoing. The Wall Street Journal first reported on the DOJ’s probe of Lewandowski.
Noem and Lewandowski were ousted in March following a congressional hearing where Noem claimed President Trump knew of her decision to launch a $220 million digital ad campaign. Noem also ordered that every contract and grant over $100,000 cross her desk for approval. Asked about the probe, Trump said “They’re stealing from me, so I want my people to be honest.” Related entries: 2026-03-05–trump-fires-noem-nominates-mullin-dhs-secretary and 2025-11-14–propublica-reveals-noem-dhs-220-million-strategy-group-corruption.
