ICE Detains and Injures a U.S. Citizen Special-Education Student Walking to Santa Maria High School, Then Releases Him as Not Its Target
ICE agents detained a 20-year-old U.S. citizen, a special-education student at Santa Maria High School, while he walked to school on October 21, and released him one-half mile from campus. He has limited verbal communication skills. He arrived at school hurt: the reported injuries are a broken wrist, black eye and lacerations, and school administration said he had a wrist that required surgery. School administrators called an ambulance. The superintendent said Santa Maria police passed information about the incident to the District Attorney, the California Attorney General, and ICE’s regional office in Los Angeles.
An ICE spokesperson said officers on a “targeted enforcement operation” had “encountered an individual they believed matched the description” of their target, and that when he “resisted officers, refused lawful commands, and assumed a fighting stance with clenched fists,” they held him “until they could confirm his identity, whereupon he was released.” ICE said he “never requested medical assistance” and called the broken-bones claim “FALSE.” City councilmember Gloria Soto: “ICE’s own statement admits agents stopped the wrong person.” She added: “Reports state he had his ID on him the whole time and was never asked for it.” Rep. Salud Carbajal called it “outrageous.”
