Judge Sooknanan Grants Government Motion to Reassign Trujillo v. DHS (California Non-Citizen Voter Demand); Case Was Not Related to Earlier LWV v. DHS

Trujillo v. DHS was brought by the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights and Pedro Trujillo. Their emergency TRO and preliminary-injunction application targets what they call the Alleged Non-Citizen Removal Policy: a letter to California officials, which the plaintiffs say demands removal of flagged voters, with a “segregate not cancel” instruction for mail ballots.

Judge Sooknanan set the government’s opposition for October 23, then granted the government’s motion to reassign, because the plaintiffs had designated the case related to the earlier League of Women Voters v. DHS, which was no longer pending on the merits. The same judge had declined, days earlier, to keep the new LWV/EPIC/LULAC suit. Both cases are now headed to random assignment; the order text read here does not say whether the briefing dates survive reassignment.
