Cleveland extends its data center moratorium through January while it writes permanent rules

Cleveland City Council extended its moratorium on new standalone data centers and expansions of existing ones through Jan. 29, ending sooner if the city adopts regulations, cleveland.com reported on October 21. Councilman Brian Kazy said Monday that council and the administration are not ready to introduce permanent legislation, and that existing data centers are not subject to specific city rules on zoning, utility use or noise. A policy adviser said the city cannot obtain direct electricity-use data from FirstEnergy. Existing centers can keep operating. The report’s date is October 21; the committee meeting it describes was the preceding Monday.
