Bloomberg Review: Russian Matryoshka Bot Network Inflates Fake Videos Targeting Democratic Candidates in Midterms
The Japan Times reported on Oct 17, 2026 that Russian disinformation operators are deploying an army of bots to inflate view counts of fictitious posts about celebrities and Democratic candidates ahead of the U.S. midterm elections. Social media researchers have attributed the posts to a Russian state-backed operation known as Matryoshka, or Operation Overload. Bloomberg News reviewed 130 videos and doctored newspaper front pages published by this network from Sept. 10 to Oct. 9. Kyiv Post, relaying the same reporting, says the network disseminated targeted disinformation against Democratic candidates in 20 US Senate races and 29 gubernatorial contests on the Nov. 3 ballot, producing synthetic videos mimicking prominent actors and fabricated news broadcasts from ABC and CBS. U.S.-based research groups Graphika and dTeam corroborated and supplemented the narratives. Researchers observed that views “can jump as high as 200,000 within the first hour but then quickly plateau.”
Both outlets republish Bloomberg’s investigation, so this is one investigation reported twice, and Bloomberg’s original was not read. It extends the earlier Matryoshka coverage at 2026-09-11–matryoshka-storm-1679-cnn-branded-celebrity-voice-clone-videos-target-democrats-midterms-ms-now to the Senate and governor races.
Correction: The line about first-hour views is Bloomberg’s own narration in the original feature, not a quote from researchers; Kyiv Post rendered it as a quotation.
