California and LA County Oppose DOJ's Related-Case Notice, and Civil-Rights Groups Move to Intervene, in United States v. California

The early fight on the docket in United States v. California is over which judge gets the case and who may defend it. The government’s notice of related case points to a private suit, Wagner v. Weber. The State’s opposition says that suit was “filed on behalf of a candidate” and a political party and rests on a different statute, the National Voter Registration Act. The State filed its own notice relating the case to the government’s earlier voter-roll suit against Weber, and Logan joined the State’s objection. Which judge takes the case is not decided on the docket I read.

Civil-rights groups asked to intervene as defendants. SIREN and Mi Familia en Accion moved to intervene and said that the Secretary of State “does not oppose the motion.” LULAC and several NAACP bodies filed a separate motion. The SIREN motion argues that those swept up would include “naturalized citizens” in particular.
