State Department Says Kristi Noem's Shield of the Americas Envoy Status Expired in September; She Is Now a Senior Adviser to Landau
CBS News reported on October 15, 2026 (disclosure date) that an unnamed State Department official said Noem’s envoy status “expired last month,” and that she is “now a senior advisor to Deputy Secretary Landau” who “continues to work on the Shield of the Americas portfolio.” The expiry date is not given and the appointing instrument was not named; CBS notes her public activities in the role “appear to have been limited,” listing a March regional tour, a March 25 meeting with Ecuador’s Noboa in Quito, and September meetings including on the UN General Assembly sidelines. Ecuador still identified her as envoy on September 22, which CBS does not reconcile.
Noem was announced as envoy in early March 2026, days after being removed as DHS Secretary (see 2026-03-05 and 2026-03-07 entries).
