White-Powder Letters Reach State Election Offices in Louisiana and at Least 31 Other States Over a Week (WIRED Tally); Louisiana and Oklahoma Evacuated Oct 13, Arizona Oct 15; No Arrest Announced as of Oct 15

Date shown is the first documented receipt (the Louisiana letter opened Oct 13, 2026), not the mailing date, which no source gives. The FBI and U.S. Postal Inspection Service say they are investigating “a series of suspicious mailings” to Secretary of State and related election offices and are working to identify the sender or senders. WIRED’s tally (Oct 19) lists Louisiana plus at least 31 other states that confirmed receipt, but that is a count of states targeted, not of letters opened: the Postal Service intercepted most before delivery, and WIRED names Arizona, Delaware, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Louisiana as the states where letters were not intercepted. Louisiana, Oklahoma and Arizona evacuations are confirmed by their own officials’ statements as reported; Louisiana’s was a partial evacuation of the elections section per WAFB.

The white powder contained in the letters opened so far has been reported as not harmful, including in Louisiana, Arizona, Wisconsin and Mississippi. Envelopes bore a “DSA” return address; DSA denies involvement, says it has not occupied that office address since 2013, and unnamed authorities quoted in the Fox station report said there is no evidence linking it. Federal investigators had announced no arrests and identified no suspect as of Oct 15 (WAFB), and on Oct 19 the FBI would not tell WIRED whether it had any leads on who was behind the campaign. Nebraska’s secretary of state said this was the second such envelope to his office, the first having come in the 2024 wave.
