Lowndes County, Alabama Approves Project Red Clay Data Center Abatement 3-2 Ahead of a Scheduled Special Meeting
The Lowndes County Commission in Alabama voted 3-2 on Tuesday morning to approve a project development agreement and a 20-year tax abatement for Project Red Clay, a data center planned by Cloverleaf Infrastructure on more than 1,000 acres in Burkville, according to Yellowhammer News and WSFA. Yellowhammer reports that commissioners had voted unanimously minutes earlier to schedule a special meeting on October 20 to take up the proposal, and that Commissioner Robert Harris then moved to approve it before that meeting could be held, with residents in the room cut off. A resident, District Judge Adrian Johnson, put the abatement’s cost at $2.4 billion in tax revenue; Cloverleaf projects about $2.85 billion in total local tax revenue over 20 years. Cloverleaf has not named a buyer for the site, and Nvidia announced a minority investment in Cloverleaf in August.
