WSJ reports Ambassador Guilfoyle asked donor Eric Deters to wire $100,000 to her American Express account six days before her confirmation hearing; her lawyer disputes the texts' authenticity
The Wall Street Journal reported (publication date Wednesday 2026-10-07; second-hand via TMZ and The Hill, the WSJ page itself not fetched) that Kimberly Guilfoyle, US Ambassador to Greece, asked Kentucky lawyer and donor Eric Deters on 2025-07-03 (text-message date), six days before her 2025-07-09 Senate Foreign Relations confirmation hearing, to wire $100,000 to her American Express account, writing in Signal messages that “it won’t show up anywhere.” Deters says he never paid. He told CBS (interview Thursday 2026-10-08) the request was “quid pro quo” for help with his tax and legal troubles; that is his characterisation as an interested party in a money dispute, and he says he paid her $300,000 in appearance fees. Guilfoyle called the accusation “completely false”; her lawyer Jesse Binnall disputed the messages’ authenticity and said she was owed roughly $150,000 for speaking and consulting (statement reported dated 2026-10-10). A later WSJ follow-up reportedly says Journal reporters verified the texts and that she told White House officials they were AI-generated (reported by Mediaite; not independently read). Nothing primary from State or the White House was found.
