Democracy Docket: DOJ Email Listed David Levin, a Florida Lawyer Convicted in 2016 of Hacking Election Websites, Among Its Maricopa County Election Observers

Democracy Docket reported on October 6, 2026 (publication date), citing Democracy Forward records, that a July 15 email to Maricopa County officials from a Civil Rights Division trial attorney listed 12 people needing authorization letters for the DOJ monitoring operation. Levin was listed by name among the “Department of Justice observers” and as “helping with our election monitoring effort in Maricopa County”. Maricopa County election officials subsequently issued Levin a credential identifying him as an observer. The earlier August 21, 2026 Democracy Docket report identified him from video and images, said the DOJ did not respond to its request to confirm his employment and title, and said Democracy Docket had not independently established whether he was formally designated as an election monitor.

The 2016 case, by kind of source. Democracy Docket says Levin served 20 days in jail after the charges were reduced to two misdemeanors. WINK News, a Fort Myers station reporting the plea on Sep 6, 2016 (publication date), says he pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor. The two accounts of the count differ and are not reconciled here; the court file was not read.
