White House Bars Politico From Air Force One Print Pool for Trump's Nebraska Campaign Stop; Other Outlets Decline the Seat

On Monday, October 5, 2026, the White House refused to let Politico board Air Force One for President Trump’s trip to Nebraska, where he held a campaign stop. Politico had been scheduled to serve as the primary print representative in the travel pool, the small group of reporters who fly with the president and share notes with the wider press corps. A Politico spokesperson confirmed to CNN that the outlet was excluded. The Press Freedom Tracker records that Politico was notified on Oct. 4, 2026.

The White House offered Politico’s seat to other outlets in the travel-pool rotation, and the publications uniformly declined, per CNN’s sources. Washington Post reporter Katherine Doyle, in the secondary print seat, wrote to colleagues that “there is no primary print pooler on this trip.” The Post sent updates without taking Politico’s place, and CBS, the television pool representative that day, shared its pool notes with print outlets; CBS News’s Josh Gross wrote internally, “Neither news organization is replacing Politico.”

A White House spokesperson gave CNN this reason: “Many outlets including Politico are granted access to attend and cover presidential events unilaterally, but traveling with the President of the United States aboard Air Force One is a privilege not a right.”

Pattern context. This repeats the move made against CNN in late September (see 2026-09-25–white-house-bars-cnn-air-force-one-pool-boycott): the White House has repeatedly barred CNN from Air Force One on days it was CNN’s turn as the television pool representative, and now did the same to Politico on its print turn, after Trump announced on September 18 that he was banning Politico, CNN and MS NOW from the White House (see 2026-09-19–white-house-confiscates-press-badges-cnn-politico-msnow). The distinction between the White House complex and tight spaces such as Air Force One is the line the administration draws around Judge Kelly’s orders (see 2026-09-24–judge-kelly-grants-tro-cnn-politico-msnow-press-passes and 2026-10-13–judge-kelly-grants-preliminary-injunction-cnn-politico-ms-now-hard-passes). Election context: the president flew to a campaign stop with no outlet in the primary print seat.

A later Axios item on continued exclusions was seen only as a search snippet and is not used here. The Washington Post article could not be fetched by script; the Post’s role rests on CNN’s account.
