Trump Announces Korean Investment of More Than $50 Billion in Alaska LNG With Sullivan Present; Seoul Says Nothing Has Been Decided and the Joint Fact Sheet Names No Amount

Alaska Public Media reported that “President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that South Korea would invest more than $50 billion for the long-planned Alaska LNG project.” Lutnick said the investment amounted to “just over $50 billion”; a White House document provided ahead of the briefing put the total Alaska investment at $54 billion. Sen. Dan Sullivan stood at the event. “Korean officials were not present at the announcement, and government officials in Seoul said they had not finalized plans to invest in Alaska LNG.”

What the joint document says

The joint U.S.-Korea fact sheet, posted by the U.S. Embassy in Korea, states no dollar amount for Alaska. Its Alaska paragraph reads: “The United States and Korea have agreed to commence working on the Alaska LNG project, subject to meeting commercial reasonableness under the Strategic Investment MOU and all applicable domestic legal requirements.” The amount cited at the briefing is therefore not in the joint text read for this entry.

What Seoul said the next day

Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources said “nothing has been decided regarding whether to invest or the size of any investment,” per The Korea Times. Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan told reporters: “This morning (after the announcement), I lodged a strong protest with Lutnick as the announcement went far beyond what was agreed.” President Lee Jae Myung wrote on X: “We agreed to begin working on the Alaska LNG project on the conditions that, first, its commercial viability is confirmed and, second, it complies with Korea’s legal procedures.”

What the developer and Alaska officials said

Glenfarne, the lead developer, said that it still needed to “work with the U.S. and Korean governments to finalize the investment structure and complete the remaining steps required to reach (final investment decision).” The Anchorage Daily News reported that “Sullivan, Begich and Dunleavy on Thursday responded to the pushback from South Korea, saying they expect the country to ultimately invest.”

Research Gaps

  • Korea’s own ministry statement in Korean or English on motie.go.kr, and any National Assembly notification.
  • Whether the $54 billion White House document is published and what it cites.
  • A final investment decision by Glenfarne, and any Korean decision after review.
