Newsom Signs SB 947 No Robo Bosses Act, Barring Employer Reliance Solely on Automated Systems to Fire or Discipline
Gov. Gavin Newsom signed SB 947, the No Robo Bosses Act, on September 30. It bars employers from relying solely on an automated decision system to discipline or fire staff, and it was one of 13 AI bills he signed that day. It takes effect on 1 July 2027, and the state labour commissioner, the attorney general and local prosecutors can enforce it.
KQED reports Newsom signed a narrower version after vetoing a previous version of the legislation, and that rideshare drivers, classified as independent contractors under Proposition 22, are left out.
