Julian Curo-Churata Dies After Medical Emergency at Richwood Correctional Center in ICE Custody
According to ICE, as relayed by researcher Austin Kocher, Julian Curo-Churata died in Louisiana on Tuesday, September 29. ICE did not report a cause of death and said the death was under investigation, and that he was held at Richwood Correctional Center, experienced a medical emergency, then was transported to a Monroe hospital, where he passed away.
Kocher reports that Enforcement and Removal Operations Baltimore arrested Curo during a targeted enforcement operation June 27, 2026. His only criminal conviction was, in ICE’s words, driving with expired vehicle registration, and he was classified as the lowest possible risk level while in detention. While at Richwood, his attorneys filed a habeas lawsuit; at the time of his death the judge had not ruled and the government had not responded.
Kocher writes that fiscal year 2026 was ICE’s deadliest year; that count is his own dashboard analysis, not an ICE tally, and his case matching is inferential. Related canon: 2026-04-29–monterroso-lemus-federal-suit-richwood-stillbirth-ice-custody.
