EO 14434 Orders the Executive Branch to Say Super Intelligence and SI Instead of AI
Date kind. Signing date is September 29, 2026, the day of the America.gov launch (2026-09-29–national-design-studio-hello-america-event-launches-america-gov-trump-names-coristine-lead-engineer-thanks-arnell-musk). The Federal Register published it at 91 FR 63129 (document 2026-20321) as Executive Order 14434. It is separate from 2026-09-29–eo-14432-streamlining-access-to-government-services-through-america-gov-gsa-nds-omb-login-gov.
What it orders. The policy section directs the executive branch to use Super Intelligence and SI in place of Artificial Intelligence and AI, and says it “will not acknowledge the usage of” the old terms “in any applicable setting”. The implementation section tells agencies to use the new terms “in official correspondence, public communications, websites, reports, policy documents, and other non-statutory documents within the executive branch”. Old text is left alone: “Nothing in this section requires the alteration of previously issued regulations, Presidential actions, contracts, grants, or other historical documents.”
The definition does not change. The new terms cover the same technologies as the statutory artificial intelligence definition, “as defined in section 9401(3) of title 15, United States Code”. The order renames an existing statutory category rather than defining a new capability level. It then requires a legislative proposal on the definition: “Within 60 days of the date of this order” the science adviser, in consultation with other agencies, submits proposed language. The proposal must include an assessment of whether the new definition should “modify, expand upon, or otherwise supersede the existing statutory definition”.
Trump on the rationale. In the launch remarks, per the Roll Call Factbase transcript: “This kind of innovation in government is just a preview of what is possible with super intelligence or SI, and that’s the official name in the United States.” He adds: “I’ll be signing a very powerful executive order.” And: “we don’t want to hear artificial because it’s not artificial”.
Link to America.gov. The America.gov order already uses the new term in its policy section, which says to “ensure that super intelligence used in connection with America.gov is accurate, reliable, and transparent”.
Other. Publication costs fall on the Office of Science and Technology Policy: “The costs for publication of this order shall be borne by the Office of Science and Technology Policy.”
Unconfirmed. Whether the order was signed on stage at the launch event is not established.
