San Diego County’s Registrar of Voters Office received five grand jury subpoenas from the U.S. Justice Department for voter information between June 1 and Sept. 16, a county spokesperson disclosed to inewsource. County spokespeople said they do not know what investigations prompted the subpoenas, and Registrar spokesperson Antonia Hutzell said: “there is no evidence of widespread voter fraud in San Diego County.” The county says the subpoenas generally sought information it is required to disclose, like registration records and voting history but not how an individual voted. The Registrar confirmed it received just one subpoena for voter records from the DOJ in 2025 and no subpoenas for voter records at all in 2024 or 2023.

A majority of the county’s elected supervisors and members of its congressional delegation reacted, with officials calling the subpoenas “unprecedented” and “deeply concerning,” some calling for their release. Brennan Center vice president Wendy Weiser called them “highly unusual.” Phil Talbert, who was U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of California for six years, said, “Nothing like this took place in the Eastern District of California during my time there.” The county extended its response deadline on inewsource’s public records request for the subpoenas to Oct. 15.

inewsource also reports that a Homeland Security Investigations official said last month that the administration’s effort to remove noncitizens from voter rolls has led to about 1,600 voter fraud cases and 160 arrests.
