Democratic State Parties Launch 'New Battlefield Project' to Place 10,000 Poll Monitors Against Feared Federal Interference

Democratic state parties announced the “New Battlefield Project” on September 14, 2026, a volunteer mobilization aiming to place 10,000 blue-vested monitors at 25 percent of the roughly 95,000 election-day polling places, concentrated in competitive districts. The effort is framed explicitly as a counter to federal interference: the administration has not ruled out deploying federal agents to cities during the election, and Trump allies have publicly urged sending immigration agents to polls. ICE and CBP leadership told a congressional committee in mid-September they have “no plans” to guard polling places. Five Democratic-led states — California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland, and Washington — have separately enacted statutory shields against federal interference at polling sites.

This is the private half of a two-track response, and the tracks answer different problems. The five state shield laws create legal exposure for a federal agent who shows up; 10,000 volunteers create a witness where the law’s enforcement would otherwise depend on the account of the person being intimidated.
