ICE Agent Christian Castro Walks Free in Texas After Abbott Sits on Minnesota's Extradition Warrant for 90 Days

ICE agent Christian Castro walked out of the Cameron County jail near Brownsville, Texas on August 27, 2026, three months after his May 29 arrest, because Texas law caps a hold on the subject of an extradition order at 90 days — at which point the state must either transfer or release. Castro faces four counts of second-degree assault and one count of falsely reporting a crime in Hennepin County, Minnesota, for firing through the closed front door of a Minneapolis home during Operation Metro Surge and hitting Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis in the leg. Castro had told investigators that Sosa-Celis and another Venezuelan man attacked him with a broom and a snow shovel; assault charges filed against those two men were dropped after surveillance footage established that Castro’s account was false. Governor Tim Walz filed the rendition paperwork; Governor Greg Abbott neither signed nor denied it, saying he does not trust Walz “on anything” and conditioning extradition on Walz first acknowledging responsibility for fraud in federal programs in Minnesota.
