State and Treasury Designate Italian Hosting Collective Autistici/Inventati a Global Terrorist

On August 26, 2026 the State and Treasury Departments designated Autistici/Inventati — an Italian volunteer collective operating since 2001 — as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist under Executive Order 13224. The same action designated Palestine Action (UK), Masar Badil, and two individuals based in Germany and Brazil.

Autistici/Inventati provides privacy-oriented email, mailing lists, web hosting and the blogging platform noblogs.org. Treasury’s stated basis is that it supplies technological infrastructure “exclusively to vetted left-wing extremist groups,” including designated organizations. Secretary Scott Bessent: “Far-left extremists, their fronts, and their enablers should be on notice: We will bring the full weight of our economic tools to bear.”

What SDGT designation does, mechanically. All property and interests in U.S. jurisdiction are blocked and must be reported to OFAC. U.S. persons are prohibited from transacting with the designated entity absent an OFAC license. Violations carry strict-liability civil penalties or criminal sanctions — meaning a U.S. person can incur liability without knowing the counterparty was designated.

That last feature is what makes this an infrastructure action rather than a sanctions action. The target is not an armed group but a hosting provider, and the sanction runs against everyone who transacts with it. Any U.S. person who pays for hosting, donates, or maintains a service relationship with a platform that hosts thousands of unrelated sites now faces strict liability. Book fairs, radio programs and cultural projects use noblogs.org; none of them were designated, and all of them are now hosted by a designated entity. The predictable effect is not that extremists lose a server — it is that everyone else leaves, and the collective said in its August 28 statement that it faces shutdown.

This is the same structural move this timeline tracks domestically, exported. The SPLC indictment in April, Bondi’s secret domestic-terrorist list admitted in February, and the tax-law action against “antifa” in December 2025 all operate by attaching a terrorism label to an intermediary rather than prosecuting conduct. Here the intermediary is a foreign volunteer collective with no U.S. presence, reached through the sanctions power rather than the criminal law — which requires no indictment, no charge, and no forum in which to contest the designation before it takes effect.
