Nassau County Terminates Its 287(g) Agreements With ICE, Letters Say Effective Aug. 25, Reserving the Right to Reenter If New York's Ban Is Struck Down

What happened. Nassau County has terminated its formal cooperation agreements with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement under a new state law, County Executive Bruce Blakeman announced on Wednesday, Aug.26. Letters to the acting director of ICE show that both the Nassau County Police Department and the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office terminated their 287(g) agreements with ICE effective Aug. 25.

The reservation. The letters, signed by County Attorney Thomas Adams, said the agencies opposed the “forced termination” and reserved the right to reenter agreements with ICE if the state law is determined to be unlawful. That makes the termination a conditional one, tied to the outcome of the court challenges to the state ban.

Rensselaer. A later WAMC account says New York State has since sued Rensselaer County and is asking a state judge to terminate the county’s 287(g) agreement.

What this entry does not establish. Both pages are local news, not the letters themselves. ICE’s own participating-agencies roster is a spreadsheet that this check cannot read as page text, so whether and when ICE dropped the Nassau rows is recorded in the research work log, not here.
