CBS Reports DOJ Plans 1,000 Monitors for the November Midterms, Citing Dhillon's Bloomberg Remarks; 289 in 2022, 714 in 2024
CBS News reported on August 18, 2026 (updated 5:54 PM EDT) that Civil Rights Division head Harmeet Dhillon made the announcement “in remarks to Bloomberg on Monday”, which was August 17, 2026 and matches the date the NAACP’s court filing gives. CBS says the Justice Department plans 1,000 federal monitors for the midterms; “record” is CBS’s word. The Bloomberg article itself sits behind an anti-bot wall and was not read, so the plan is sourced to CBS’s report of it and to the NAACP’s allegation that Dhillon announced it for the November 3, 2026 general election.
CBS’s context, attributed to its own sourcing: a DOJ official told CBS there were 289 people sent to polling places in 2022 and 714 in 2024, across 27 states in 86 jurisdictions. Former officials told CBS “a majority of those 714 were DOJ attorneys and staff,” with a smaller share from the separate Office of Personnel Management observer program tied to court orders. CBS wrote that it “remains unclear” how the Department can reach 1,000, that the department “will seek federal employees to volunteer,” and that “A full list of locations is expected to be made public once the primaries are concluded.”
The distinction that matters for what these people may do: the number counts monitors, and by CBS’s account of past practice most are Department staff, not court-appointed observers. CBS does not report how many of the 1,000 would be observers.
