Disputed: Six Republican States Were Not Scheduling August Special Sessions After Callais, Their Maps Were Enacted Earlier

Correction: this entry’s original premise is not supported and is withdrawn (status: disputed). The original text had Texas, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Florida and Tennessee each scheduling a special session for August of this year. None of its three sources says that: the Brennan Center piece is dated April 30, 2026 and the KQED episode May 5, 2026 (both about the Supreme Court ruling in Louisiana v. Callais), and The Fulcrum piece describes early-2026 redistricting fights, before that ruling. The source dates on the original were wrong. The legislatures’ own records show no August redistricting session this year in the six states; each had already moved earlier. What each date is:

The likely source of the error is two real August sessions, Texas’s second called session and Missouri’s special session, both in 2025, which the entry placed in 2026 and extended to four states that did not hold one. What survives from the original is the Callais ruling itself (KQED); Florida and Tennessee moved after it, on the dates above. The original’s inference of coordination from a single month had no basis in these dates and is withdrawn.
