Michigan Democratic Party Files Campaign-Finance Complaint Against AG Nominee Doug Lloyd Over Seven-Month Contribution Gap

The Michigan Democratic Party filed a campaign-finance complaint on August 13, 2026 against Doug Lloyd, the Michigan Republican Party’s nominee for Attorney General, alleging his pre-convention finance report was both late and, in the complaint’s characterization, “much more egregious[ly]” inaccurate.

Under the Michigan Campaign Finance Act, pre-convention reports are due 11 days before the nominating convention (Aug. 22, 2026 for Republicans), making Lloyd’s filing due August 11; MDP’s complaint noted, consistent with the state’s online campaign-finance database, that Lloyd filed a day late, on August 12. MDP’s complaint noted four Lloyd campaign events publicized on his own social media between late January and mid-July with no matching listed contributions, and no contributions at all from WinRed, the platform through which Lloyd’s campaign solicited online donations. MDP Chair Curtis Hertel: “Doug Lloyd can’t even follow campaign finance law — he can’t be trusted to uphold the law as our state’s chief law enforcement officer.”

Lloyd campaign spokesperson Keith Schipper said the Michigan Department of State’s Bureau of Elections gave the campaign an incorrect deadline (Aug. 16 rather than the correct Aug. 11), causing the discrepancy, and that the campaign filed a partial report once it recognized the error.

On August 14, 2026, the Bureau of Elections partially confirmed this: a letter to the Lloyd campaign admitted a staff member had given Lloyd’s campaign treasurer the wrong deadline, and the Bureau waived late-filing fees and voided the Failure to File notice. A Bureau of Elections spokesperson told Michigan Advance that only the lateness portion of the complaint was resolved by that letter — the accuracy/completeness allegation (the seven-month reporting gap) was not addressed.

On August 15, 2026, MDP filed a second complaint, stating Lloyd’s campaign had filed a new report the previous night that MDP called “still egregiously incomplete,” continuing to allege underreported contributions and expenditures inconsistent with Lloyd’s own social-media activity. Hertel: “We do not know what Lloyd is hiding, but we do know that his disregard for campaign finance laws means he cannot be trusted with the position of Attorney General.”
