GAO Audit Finds 96% of DOGE Grant Savings Unverifiable, $27.4B in Claimed Contract Cuts Never Executed

GAO report GAO-26-108615, published August 6, 2026, found DOGE’s “Wall of Receipts” claim of $110 billion in federal savings is systematically inflated: 96% of claimed grant savings lack any verifiable methodology, 2,503 contracts totaling $27.4 billion in claimed savings show no actual termination action ever taken, and roughly two-thirds of all contract-savings figures are unverifiable or methodologically indefensible. Senate Democrats Gary Peters and Richard Blumenthal, who requested the review, called it proof DOGE misled the public about its results. DOGE had not responded to the findings as of publication.
