GAO: White House Stonewalled All DOGE Oversight Requests; Fewer Than Half of Agencies Cooperated

A GAO report (GAO-26-108403) released August 5, 2026 found the White House and federal agencies refused to fully cooperate with oversight of DOGE operations: fewer than half of agencies responded to GAO’s personnel-document requests, ten missed the response deadline entirely, and six claimed to have no matching records. The Executive Office of the President stonewalled every request for DOGE financial-disclosure and ethics-training records — a complete accountability blackout at the top of the initiative. GAO further found the U.S. DOGE Service can legally continue operating past DOGE’s formal July 4 shutdown, meaning the structural changes DOGE made to the federal workforce have no accountability mechanism attached even in retrospect.
