ICE Widens Airport Arrests to Legally-Present Migrants Using TSA Checkpoint Database Matching, No Warrants

ICE, working with TSA at airport check-in counters and gates, has arrested at least 27 people in nine states who entered the US legally — spouses of Americans, asylum applicants, pending green-card holders, tech workers — using database name-matches at travel chokepoints rather than warrants or targeted surveillance operations. The tactic is qualitatively new: prior airport enforcement targeted people with existing deportation orders; this sweep catches legally-present people who overstayed visas or have other pending status. Immigration attorneys report the shift represents a fundamental erosion of the travel-as-safe-passage presumption that has governed US airports.

This escalation follows the earlier ICE deployment to 13 major airports during the DHS shutdown (2026-03-22–ice-deployed-13-airports-dhs-shutdown), converting what began as emergency staffing backfill into a standing enforcement posture applied to a broader population than deportation-order holders. The absence of a warrant requirement — relying purely on database matching at a TSA chokepoint — is the accountability gap: the ICE/TSA information-sharing MOU authorizing this has not been made public.
