Indianapolis Council Committee Advances Data Center Moratorium Through 2027, 10-3

A Marion County/Indianapolis City-County Council committee voted 10-3 along party lines on July 13-14 to advance a moratorium on new data center approvals through the end of 2027. Council President Maggie Lewis authored the ordinance; Mayor Joe Hogsett released a statement of support. Projects already approved (Metrobloks, Sabey, DC Blox) are grandfathered. The full council vote is set for August 10. Indianapolis had faced roughly a year of resident pressure on data center density, power draw, and water-use concerns.

Indiana already has at least 17 counties with active data center moratoriums as of the WFYI statewide tracker — Indianapolis, as the state’s capital and largest city, joining that count marks the moratorium wave’s arrival at the political core of the state rather than only its rural and suburban counties, a distinction that changes the wave’s statewide legislative salience.
