Commerce Eases UAE MGX Export Controls Weeks After Tahnoon's $500M World Liberty Financial Stake Disclosed
The Commerce Department announced it would “favorably review” export license applications for UAE sovereign wealth firm MGX — chaired by Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed, who had secretly acquired a 49% stake in Trump’s World Liberty Financial and wired $187M upfront. The easing landed weeks after that stake was disclosed and days after Trump’s July 1 financial disclosure showed $1.4B in 2025 crypto income, more than $550M of it from WLF token sales alone. Senator Elizabeth Warren called the arrangement “outright corruption.” Whether the Commerce action directly benefits WLF specifically, as opposed to MGX’s broader investment portfolio, is not yet documented in the regulatory record — the correlation is strong and the timing is tight, but the causal mechanism Warren alleges remains an assertion pending further documentation.
This extends the pattern of foreign-sovereign-capital entanglement with Trump-family crypto ventures already tracked through the original MGX stake disclosure and House Democrats’ WLF-UAE-bank probe (2026-02-19–house-democrats-probe-world-liberty-financial-uae-bank), landing the same week the GENIUS Act’s stablecoin rulemaking deadline approached (2026-07-12–genius-act-july18-deadline-banks-enter-stablecoin-market) — a regulatory environment in which the same administration simultaneously eases export controls for a foreign investor in the president’s own crypto venture and finalizes the rules governing that venture’s stablecoin product.
