ICE Kills Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston; Agency's Self-Defense Account Collapses Under Witness and Medical Evidence

An ICE agent fatally shot Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old Mexican national who had lived in the U.S. for more than 30 years and was in the process of obtaining legal status, as he drove his construction crew to a Houston job site on July 7, 2026. ICE’s initial account claimed agents fired in self-defense after Salgado Araujo rammed a law-enforcement vehicle and ignored verbal commands during a “targeted operation” traffic stop. That account has since collapsed: the three men riding in his work van told an attorney no ramming occurred and at no point were agents’ lives in danger, and the Harris County Medical Examiner ruled the death a homicide from a penetrating gunshot wound. DHS acknowledged the involved officers had not yet received body-worn cameras, attributing the gap to shutdown-related funding delays. Houston Mayor John Whitmire, who initially claimed the city had no jurisdiction to investigate, reversed course as the case became a local flashpoint.
