Trump Family's World Liberty Financial Nearing OCC Federal Bank Charter Approval
World Liberty Financial (WLFI), the stablecoin platform co-founded by President Trump and his sons, is nearing approval for a national trust bank charter from the OCC — headed by a Trump appointee — per Notus reporting citing multiple former OCC officials. If granted, WLFI would be the first presidential-family-owned crypto firm to hold a federal banking license, letting it issue and redeem its USD1 stablecoin under a single federal regulator. Trump family crypto holdings are estimated at $1.4B; USD1 is largely backstopped by Binance, which holds $3.56B of the $4.25B in circulation, formalizing a foreign-entanglement exposure under federal supervision if the charter is approved.
This is the latest milestone in a charter process the timeline has tracked since WLTC Holdings’ original application (2026-01-07–world-liberty-financial-occ-bank-charter-application), through NCRC/AFREF opposition comment letters (2026-02-09–ncrc-afref-comment-letters-wltc-charter) and the May conditional-approval milestone (2026-05-21–wlf-nears-occ-conditional-approval-national-trust-bank-charter-usd1). The OCC’s April 2026 rule change to 12 CFR 5.20 (2026-04-01–occ-12-cfr-5-20-amendment-trust-bank-chartering-rule-effective) lowered the regulatory bar for exactly this kind of trust-bank charter.
