BBC Verify Satellite Analysis Finds Iranian Attacks Damaged 20 U.S. Military Sites

BBC Verify reported on June 1, 2026 (report date) that Iran has damaged 20 US military sites since the start of the war, in its words “more extensive than publicly acknowledged.” This is the “20 bases” figure that circulates in October commentary: it is an older journalistic count of sites visible in imagery, not a new count and not a department figure. I could not reach bbc.com; the text is BBC’s as syndicated by AOL, with IBTimes as a second copy.

Damage. BBC puts the damage at “millions of dollars of damage” to air defences, refuelling aircraft and radars, across eight countries, including three THAAD batteries (Al Ruwais and Al Sader in the UAE, Muwaffaq Salti in Jordan). IBTimes retells it as “hundreds of millions of dollars”; the BBC text I read does not say that, so cite BBC for scale. Some analysts put the number of sites as high as 28; that is their estimate, not BBC’s count.

Disclosure. A US defence official declined comment, citing “operational security reasons.” Planet Labs confirmed in April (announcement date) that it would withhold imagery of the region at US government request, so BBC combined other providers’ images with older Planet ones.

The department has not, in anything I read, published its own list of damaged bases, so there is no official figure to compare the 20 against.
