NYT Reports Dan Bishop Was Appointed a Special Attorney With a National Election-Integrity Remit, Taking Over the Fraud Inquiry From Thomas Albus
The New York Times reported, in a story reprinted by the Las Vegas Sun on this entry’s date (publication date), that Dan Bishop, the U.S. attorney for the Middle District of North Carolina and a former congressman, was appointed in early April 2026 as a special attorney with the authority to roam the country examining election integrity, and has taken over the job of running the election fraud inquiry from Thomas C. Albus, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri. The Times says the inquiry has so far included the seizure of hundreds of boxes of records from an election office in Fulton County, Georgia, and an attempt to demand the identities of every worker who staffed the county’s 2020 presidential election.
Context: the Times notes Bishop was one of 147 Republican lawmakers who voted on Jan. 6 not to certify Trump’s loss. See 2026-07-10–trump-fires-eac-commissioners-hicks-hovland-after-humphreys-executor for the parallel personnel changes at the EAC.
